Ubud is a catchall shaped by the rice terraces. A soft, slip-cast ceramic form, glazed, steps down onto a turned maple base like one terrace onto the next, and the two are held together by a hidden dowel.
In the hills around Ubud, rice terraces step down the slopes in soft, curving bands. Each level is a shallow basin, holding water before passing it on to the one below through subak, the cooperative irrigation system Balinese farmers have shared for centuries. Nothing in the landscape is quite straight. The edges follow the land, and every field finds its own level.
Ubud brings that landscape down to the size of a hand. The ceramic is the upper terrace: a smooth basin that holds what’s small and precious. The maple is the terrace below: broader, warmer, and holding what’s heavier and used every day. The rounded, irregular outline follows the curve of a field edge rather than a drawn circle. Putting things down at the end of the day becomes a small act of settling, everything in its place and at its own level, like water in the fields.
Glazed slip-cast ceramic, turned maple, and a concealed dowel.
