SHOCKING!

Touch-operated night lamp

A fake outlet with a fork stuck in it. Touch the fork to turn it on. Touch it again to turn it off. Capacitive touch turns danger into delight.

The story

“Don’t stick a fork in the outlet.” It’s one of the first rules we learn, and one of the few that everyone remembers. SHOCKING! takes the forbidden gesture and makes it the source of light rather than harm. It turns fear into something you keep by the bed.

The face in the socket. American outlets have always looked startled. The piece leans into that pareidolia: the receptacle is the face, and the title is its expression.

Readymades and surreal domestic objects. The lamp belongs to the tradition of everyday things made uncanny by one small shift, like a teacup lined with fur or a fork where it shouldn’t be. The object is familiar, and only the situation is wrong.
