Wallaby

Dining chair

Wallaby is a dining chair built from two silhouettes. Each side is one flat panel, cut in a single line that rises into the back post, arches between the legs, and leans forward onto the front foot.

The story

The chair is made from five main parts: two side panels, a seat, a backrest, and a hidden stretcher beneath the seat.

The side panels carry everything. Each is a single flat profile with a tall, straight back post, a front leg that angles forward, and a pointed arch cut between them. The arch takes away material where it isn’t needed and gives the chair its stance.

The seat rests on the panels’ shoulders, and the backrest is held between the two posts, its slight recline set by the cut of the profile. Every edge is softened. The panels are (dark, matte-finished), and against them the warm grain of the seat and back is the only thing that looks soft.
